*Private view : 26 April 6.00 – 9.00 pm with performance by Flame Proof Moth*

The Sunday Painter is pleased to announce the opening of Rug Whoops, an exhibition of new works by Joshua Abelow, Ellen Gronemeyer Stuart Middleton, Alex Rathbone and John Strutton.

The title, Rug Whoops, an anagram of ‘Group Show’ seemed a fitting approach to frame an exhibition of works by these five different artists. The serious anagrammatist seeks out anagrams that after the rearrangement of letters, still pertain a hint or a link to the original words, to lift a few from an online hall of fame: Slot Machine = Cash Lost in’em, Snooze Alarms = Alas! No More Z’s or the disturbingly poetic Desperation = A rope ends it. The vast majority of anagrams produced however are garbled, and appear cryptic.

Within the artists work there is a personal, habitual logic at play that underpins and fuels the work and in a similar way to the anagram it is produced, yet partially concealed through these individual processes, the viewer left with the aftermath. Ritual and impulse seeps through the practices with rawness in both content and approach – ephemeral clutter and dumb characters are strewed across different surfaces: walls, canvas, drumskins, guitars, a laptop and a leather jacket.
